The A.S.S.U.R.E Model

What is the A.S.S.U.R.E model ?

The ASSURE model is a procedural guide for planning and delivering instructions that integrates technology and media into the teaching process. It also refers to a systematic approach of writing lesson plans that helps teachers in organizing instructional procedures.

The ASSURE Model consists of six (6) major steps which makes the acronym  A.S.S.U.R.E.

A - Analyze Learners
S- State Objectives
S- Select Methods, Media & Materials
U- Utilize Methods, Media & Materials
R-Require Learner Participation
E- Evaluate Students Performance

Today I will be focusing on the A in the ASSURE Model.

A - Analyze Learners

The first step in ASSURE Model is to analyze your learners. To do this you have to examine your learners in detail. You must be able to know who your learners are and how do they learn. The main areas that you should mainly focus on while analyzing your learners are their General Characteristics (grade level, emotional, physical, mental or social problems, etc ), Specific Entry Competencies ( prior knowledge, skills, attitudes, etc ), and their learning styles (visual, musical, verbal, logical, etc ).
When you are done analyzing your learner you should know your learners such as, their age, academic qualifications, competencies, genders, etc.

The information gathered will be able to help you decide the specific strategies, resources and learning styles  you want to use during their learning process and modify your lessons in their learning strategies.

General Characteristics

Characteristics of your learners depends on their reading skills, ethnicity or cultural group, learners apathy, social background, etc. Learners entering a new conceptual area for the first time may need more direct, concrete kinds of experiences, such as field trips or role-playing exercises. More advanced learners usually have a sufficient base for using audiovisual or even verbal materials.

 Specific Entry Competencies

This is a description of the types of knowledge expected of the learners. At the beginning you will have to assume that the learner does not have the skills and or understanding for the lesson.
This realizations suggest that instructors must verify assumptions about entry competencies through informal means (such as in-class questioning or out-of-class interviews) or more formal means (such as testing with standardized or teacher-made tests). Entry tests are assessment, both formal and informal, that determine whether students posses the prerequisites.

 Learning styles

Learning style refers to a cluster of psychological traits that determine how an individual perceives, interacts with, and respond emotionally to learning environments.
The psychologist Howard Gardner discovered seven versions of  intelligence to determine the learners' styles, they were;
  •  Verbal/linguistic (language),
  •  Logical/mathematical (scientific/quantitative),
  • Visual/spatial,
  • Musical/rhythmic,
  • Bodily/kinesthetic (dancing/athletics),
  • Interpersonal (ability to understand other people)
  • Intrapersonal (ability to understand oneself
